RIO-BRAZIL

Brazil (Portuguese: Brasil) is the largest country in South America. Brazil is an incredibly diverse country, in people, culture, and landscapes—from the famous summer carnaval in Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Olinda, and Recife to the wild power of nature in the Amazon and Iguaçu Falls. You’ll find bustling cities, laid-back beaches, and traditional lifestyles, often right next to each other. Brazilian culture, which varies substantially across the country, comes from an international mix of European colonizers, African and Asian communities (notably in Salvador and São Paulo, respectively), and indigenous influence throughout the country.

In this YOLO trip to Brazil, you start at Rio de Janeiro, you visit the iconic attractions by trail, bike and kayak. Journeying down the Costa Verde, you kayak around the beautiful Saco do Mamangua and enjoy the spectacular peak views over the whole coastline here and from the peaks of Ilha Grande, the rugged island paradise.

  1. Day 1 First Views of Rio de Janeiro

Your Brazil Tour begins on arrival in Rio, where after transferring to your hotel, you head out for your first hike to the top of Dois Irmaos, the mountains overlooking Ipanema Beach. The hike begins in the Vidigal Favela, a fascinating mix of scenery and the unique culture of Rio’s poorest mountain-side neighbourhoods, before taking you up through vegetation to the rocky peak. The views over the neighbouring Rocinha Favela, Leblon and Ipanema Beaches, the lagoon and up to Cristo are stunning and a spectacular start to your time in Rio. If time permits on arrival day, we can also include the tandem hang-gliding flight from the Pedra Bonita ramp to land on the sands of Sao Conrado below.

  2. Day 2 Christ the Redeemer by Bike!

After breakfast, you begin a morning cycling with the drive up to Vista Dona Marta for your first view of ’Cristo’. From here you pedal through the cool air of the Tijuca Forest, which covers the granite mountains around which Rio is built. A steep climb takes you to Corcovado and the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer overlooks Rio. The 360˚ views of Guanabara Bay, Sugar Loaf, the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon and the beaches ringing the city are unbeatable. Other possible sights include monkeys, sloth and toucans. You continue up the Paineiras road and eventually down the spectacular curves of the Vista Chinesa route, to the lagoon and finally your hotel.

  3. Day 3 Kayaking & Climbing Sugar Loaf

In the morning you travel to Praia Vermelha, the beach base of the cable car station that takes you to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain. First though you take to the ocean from the beach, paddling kayaks out to Ilha da Cotunduba and back. Back on dry land, in the afternoon you circle Urca & Sugar Loaf rocks along a 2hr trail. The final section is the short climb of 25m/80ft up the granite and can be done by beginners of reasonable fitness. Enjoying the views from Sugar Loaf having just climbed it is the most satisfying way to visit one of Rio’s postcard places, especially as you can see the sun setting over Rio. After descending by the cable car, you return to your hotel.

  4. Day 4 Costa Verde Kayaking

In the morning, you journey down the Costa Verde, Brazil’s Emerald Coast, and possibly its most spectacular coastal route. After leaving Rio behind, the 3-4hr drive takes you on the coast-hugging road, with jungle-covered mountains towering up to your right, and tropical islands dotting the sparkling blue Bay of Angra dos Reis to your left. After arriving at the pier in Paraty, you board your boat and motor around the coast to Saco do Mamangua. This remote inlet is 8km long and has tropical mountains towering on either side. You enter your kayaks to explore some of the islands near the mouth such as Cotia before paddling to your accommodation on the shores.

  5. Day 5 Pedalling to Prainha

The stunning morning view from your accommodation includes the imposing shape of Sugar Loaf Mountain (no, not that one!), at 1,600ft/500m the highest peak aorund Saco do Mamangua. Morning brings a hike up to the top for views that encompass a wide range of the Juatinga and Laranjeiras Peninsulas, with the highest Costa Verde peaks and many of its islands also visible. After lunch on the beach below the peak, in the afternoon you continue to the far end of Mamangua, to paddle through the mangrove channels, and enjoy a little waterfall hike. Evening is free to enjoy the stars above and perhaps below! The waters are often full of phosphorescent plankton.

  6. Day 6 Paddling Back to Paraty

The morning flight takes you to Iguazu Falls, and your first chance to see the 275 separate falls of the Rio Iguazu comes as you land. On arrival you will be met for an immediate tour of the Brazil National Park, where you can enjoy the majestic panoramic views of Iguazu from across the gorge. Options include viewing the falls from above with helicopter rides above them. In the late afternoon you transfer to your hotel on the Argentina side of the river with the evening free. Please be sure to wear appropriate clothing and footwear for Iguazu Falls, as walkways, paths and yourselves become wet from the spray. Camera protection is also a good idea.

  7. Day 7 Escape to Ilha Grande

After breakfast you transfer to Angra dos Reis where the 90min boat journey to the largest island in the bay, Ilha Grande, giving you plenty of time to admire the scenery. On arrival at Vila do Abraao, the main village of the island, you will be helped with your luggage as you walk to your hotel nearby. With no vehicles on the island, journeys on foot along the beaches may be necessary. After checking in, the afternoon is free to enjoy the beach, swing in a hammock under the trees, or perhaps walk the half an hour trail to the beaches at Praia Crena or Abraaozinho. In the shallows of Crena or Praia Canto, the main beach, you can often find sea turtles feeding, and snorkelling with them is an island treat.

  8. Day 8 Praia Lopes Mendes Trail

One of the classic days on Ilha Grande is to visit Lopes Mendes, regularly voted as one of the very finest beaches on the whole of Brazil’s 8,000km coastline. You can hike over the headlands for two hours to Palmas, Pouso and finally cross through to the beach on the Atlantic side, or you can catch the taxiboats which take you most of the way there, leaving just the final part of the hike. The white sand and crystal clear waters of the beach are backed by tropical jungle and framed by mountains, and you may find few other people there during the week. Lunch is best eaten back at Pouso and you can take the late afternoon boat back to Vila do Abraao if you prefer not to hike.

  9. Day 9 Parrot's Peak Hill

Your second Ilha Grande hike takes you up Pico do Papagaio (Parrot’s Peak), the second highest mountain on the island. The trail takes you out of the village in the direction of Dois Rios. Before the top of the trail, you turn up to the right and walk amongst Atlantic Rainforest roots and bamboo groves for around 4 hours. The final part is a steeper scramble up the neck of the parrot, before you finally emerge on the rocky head with stunning panoramic views of the Costa Verde, Restinga da Marambaia, even all the way up to Rio on a clear day. Vila do Abraao is also there beneath you. You will have earned the rest to appreciate the magnificent view!

  10. Day 10 Flying Home from Brazil

An early departure takes you back to the Ilha Grande pier for your boat back to Brazil! On arrival back on the mainland, you will be met at the marina for the transfer back along the Costa Verde to Rio de Janeiro. You will arrive with plenty of time to check in for your overnight international flight home, perhaps time to check your photos and your memories of this wonderfully exotic part of Brazil. This tour of Rio de Janeiro and the Costa Verde can also be combined with any other of our Brazil destinations, with side trips and extensions to Iguazu Falls, the Amazon Rainforest, and even Buenos Aires in Argentina all very easy to arrange.
